Erotic Empathy and How It Benefits Your Relationship

11.26.2020
Colleen and Amanda speak about Erotic Empathy and how it plays out for men and women in our lives. Amanda speaks about Eroticism as the inter personalization for desire and the impact that two people have upon another in order to initiate intimacy. We learn to reject our own erotic potential and in so doing we reject our partners. We reject our partner out of our own fear. We cannot shine shame on our partners if they see something in us that we cannot see in ourselves. We need to have erotic empathy for our partner and not dismiss what they see in you. Colleen O'Neil, founder of Mediation and Beyond explores with Dr. Veena Verma-Dzik a board certified Naturopathic Physician and certified medical acupuncturist the necessities of supporting our immune system during the pandemic and always. Dr V speaks to the importance of working with a medical professional before starting any vitamin regimen to make certain that you are not only taking what you need but the correct dosage of the supplement you are taking. Dr V speaks to creating a healthy lifestyle rather than just taking a medication. Her go to supplements especially now are Vitamin D3, Vitamin C, Zinc, Monolaurin, Quercetin, Glutahione. These are significant in helping support a healthy immune system in addition to exercise, proper sleep habits and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. One style that Dr V endorses is the Mediterranean Diet, as she feels it has all the components of clean eating. One of the last things touched upon is the importance of taking care of your mental health as it can impact your physical health. Reducing our stress levels, reducing alcoholic consumption, dealing with our anxiety and depression with the professionals who can assist and guide us. Anchovies and Erotic Differentiation

10.01.2020
Colleen O'Neil of Mediation and Beyond speaks with Dr Joe Kort, founder of The Center for Relationship and Sexual Health and co-director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes. Colleen and Joe speak to the importance of having sexually healthy conversations and why they can be so challenging. Take the time to listen to the anchovie analogy. Definitely spot on! Dr Kort takes a deep dive into the importance of being able to share our erotic interests and how our erotic differentiation can work for us and not against us. Reality is that heterosexual couples are not forced to speak to their sexuality whereas gay male couples and lesbian couples are forced to speak to their erotic preferences because they have to figure out how to explore their own sexuality, whereas heterosexual couples are moved into heterosexism where there is a standard of traditional sexually (missionary position, piv-penis in vagina); we are not taught to speak about what turns us on and how can we bring that together in our relationships, instead of being quiet about it, berated for it or misunderstood and made to feel badly, setting each of us up to step outside the relationship.Dr Kort states that "Erotic thoughts can be very threatening. Erotic differentiation is about what turns you on personally and what turns me on personally and how do we bring that together as a couple, this is what most couples struggle with." Dr Kort continues to speak how we identify our relationship is important and that most people don't think about it. Dr Kort speaks with couples who state that they are monogamous and he will ask have you negotiated your monogamy. Dr Kort quotes Dr Marty Klein, "...couples often fight over contracts that they never made." Monogamy can mean very different things to one another and there needs to be clarity for the couple. Sexuality is so loaded says Dr. Kort. Dr Kort goes on to say that our erotic lives don't have to be a threat to one another. Sexual health is different for each person and sexual healthy conversations are necessary. Dr Kort suggests starting with Sexionnaire a quiz to understand desire discrepancy. Dr Kort speaks to anchovies and sex, what a great analogy!! We don't have to like what our partners like but we do need to validate it and incorporate it into the relationship in a way that honors our sexual preferences. Dr Kort speaks to lack of education about sexual healthy conversations, the antidote to all the shame is sex education, sex education has to include sexual pleasure and to be able to discuss openly about sexual pleasure. We are much more comfortable professionally and personally speaking about sexual trauma than sexual pleasure. The mental health field has let us down with conversations about sexual pleasure. The youth of today are far more literate than ever however relationally they may struggle because there is a lack of live human contact in this digital age. Dr Kort addresses sexual and porn literacy that takes place in Norways educational system. Dr Kort says a great place to start is sharing your sexual vision in a non-judgmental space.
